What I was trying to make

My soldering iron kept rolling off the edge of my desk because I didn't have anywhere proper to set it down between joints. This was a fast fix, not a big project, just something I needed and could print overnight.

Design process

Basic shape: a ring to cradle the iron barrel at an angle, a wide flat base so it can't tip over, and a shallow bowl next to it for a brass sponge. Took about twenty minutes to model since it's just a handful of primitives and a boolean union.

Electronics and components

None.

Build process

One print, about two hours, no supports needed. Printed in PLA even though it's near a heat source, on the logic that the iron tip doesn't actually touch the stand, just rests in the ring a few centimeters away from the hot part.

Problems and failed attempts

The ring was originally sized for a different iron and was slightly too narrow for the one I actually use daily, so the iron wouldn't sit flush. Fixed by rescaling the ring diameter and reprinting, no bigger issue than that.

What changed between versions

  • v1: ring diameter too small for my actual iron
  • v2 (current): resized ring to fit properly

Final result

Works exactly as intended. Not exciting, but I use it every single day, which is more than I can say for some of the more ambitious projects on this site.
